Causes of Myocardial Infarction
Most commonly caused by rupture of an atherosclerotic plaque within a coronary artery, triggering formation of a blood clot that suddenly blocks blood flow to part of the heart muscle. Underlying risk factors include coronary artery disease, high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and obesity, all of which promote plaque formation and instability. Acute triggers can include intense physical exertion, severe emotional stress, cocaine use, and extreme cold exposure in susceptible individuals.
