What is Urticaria?
Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a skin reaction characterized by raised, itchy, red or skin-colored welts that can appear suddenly anywhere on the body and often shift location within hours. It results from the release of histamine and other chemicals from mast cells in the skin, causing localized swelling and itching. Episodes can be acute, resolving within six weeks, or chronic, persisting for months or longer without an identifiable trigger. While usually not dangerous, hives can occasionally accompany a more severe allergic reaction requiring urgent care.
