What is Chest Trauma?
Chest trauma refers to injury to the chest wall, lungs, heart, or major blood vessels within the thoracic cavity, resulting from either blunt force such as a motor vehicle accident or fall, or penetrating injury such as a stab or gunshot wound. It can range from minor rib fractures to life-threatening injuries such as a collapsed lung, cardiac injury, or major vessel rupture. Because the chest houses vital organs essential for breathing and circulation, even seemingly minor chest injuries can rapidly become life-threatening if internal structures are damaged. Prompt assessment and, when needed, emergency intervention are critical to survival.
