What is Perianal Abscess?

A perianal abscess is a painful collection of pus that forms near the anus, typically resulting from infection of the small glands inside the anal canal that become blocked and infected. It causes significant localized pain, swelling, and often fever, and requires prompt drainage to prevent the infection from spreading further into surrounding tissue. Left untreated, a substantial proportion of perianal abscesses progress to form a chronic anal fistula, an abnormal tunnel connecting the infected gland to the skin surface. It is more common in men and in individuals with certain underlying bowel conditions.

Causes of Perianal Abscess

Most commonly caused by infection of the anal glands lining the anal canal, often due to blocked ducts that allow bacterial overgrowth. Risk factors include inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn's disease, diabetes, immunosuppression, recent anal trauma or surgery, and receptive anal intercourse. Poor hygiene and chronic constipation with straining can also contribute.
