Causes of Hypothyroidism
Most commonly caused by Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune condition in which the immune system gradually attacks and damages the thyroid gland, reducing its ability to produce hormone. Other causes include iodine deficiency, prior thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine treatment, certain medications, and, less commonly, disorders affecting the pituitary gland that regulates thyroid function. Women, particularly those over 60, and individuals with a family history of thyroid or other autoimmune conditions are at higher risk.
