Causes of Bunion
Bunions develop due to an inherited structural predisposition affecting foot mechanics and joint stability, which causes the big toe joint to gradually shift out of alignment under normal walking forces over many years. Wearing narrow, tight, or high-heeled shoes that compress the toes can accelerate this process and worsen associated pain, though footwear alone does not cause bunions in the absence of an underlying structural predisposition. Certain conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and flat feet, along with a family history of bunions, further increase susceptibility.
