Treatment & Types of Tonsillitis in Dockyard Road, Mumbai, Maharashtra
Viral tonsillitis is managed supportively with rest, fluids, throat lozenges, and pain relief medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, as antibiotics provide no benefit against viral infection. Bacterial tonsillitis confirmed by a throat swab or rapid strep test is treated with a full course of antibiotics, typically penicillin or amoxicillin, to clear the infection and prevent rheumatic fever. Surgical removal of the tonsils, known as tonsillectomy, is reserved for individuals with frequent recurrent infections, significantly enlarged tonsils obstructing breathing, or complications such as abscess formation.
