Causes of Interstitial Lung Disease
Causes include chronic exposure to environmental or occupational irritants such as asbestos, silica dust, or certain moulds and bird droppings, autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma, and certain medications or radiation therapy. A significant proportion of cases, particularly idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, have no clearly identifiable cause, though genetic predisposition and smoking are recognised risk factors. Age over 50 and a history of gastroesophageal reflux are also associated with higher risk in some forms.
