Causes of Stuttering
The exact cause of stuttering is not completely understood, but it is believed to result from a combination of genetic factors, since it often runs in families, and differences in the brain's language processing and speech motor control regions. Developmental stuttering, the most common type, emerges as children are learning language and is thought to reflect a temporary or persistent mismatch between language development and speech motor coordination. Less commonly, stuttering can develop following a neurological injury such as a stroke or head trauma, or be associated with significant emotional trauma.
