What is Trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by a microscopic parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis, which infects the urogenital tract and is considered one of the most prevalent curable sexually transmitted infections worldwide. Many infected individuals, particularly men, experience no symptoms at all, while women are somewhat more likely to develop noticeable genital irritation and discharge, though a substantial proportion of infections in both sexes remain entirely asymptomatic. Despite frequently causing no symptoms, untreated trichomoniasis can increase the risk of acquiring or transmitting other sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, and has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes when present during pregnancy. The infection is easily diagnosed with laboratory testing and readily curable with appropriate antibiotic treatment.
