Causes of Dysphagia
Dysphagia can result from neurological conditions such as stroke, Parkinson's disease, or multiple sclerosis that impair the nerves and muscles coordinating the swallowing reflex, as well as from structural problems such as esophageal strictures, tumours, or severe acid reflux that physically narrow or obstruct the swallowing pathway. Muscular conditions affecting the throat and esophagus, and age-related decline in swallowing muscle strength, can also contribute to difficulty swallowing. In children, dysphagia can result from developmental or structural abnormalities present from birth.
