Causes of Genital Warts
Genital warts are caused by infection with certain low-risk strains of the human papillomavirus, primarily types 6 and 11, transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact during vaginal, anal, or oral sexual activity with an infected partner. The virus can be transmitted even when no visible warts are present, and a person can carry and transmit the virus for months to years before any warts appear or without ever developing visible symptoms. A weakened immune system can increase susceptibility to visible outbreaks and make clearance of the virus more difficult.
