Causes of Chest Trauma
Most commonly caused by blunt trauma from motor vehicle accidents, falls, or sports injuries, or by penetrating trauma such as stab or gunshot wounds. The underlying mechanism involves direct damage to the ribs, lungs, heart, or great vessels, or secondary injury from fractured ribs puncturing internal structures. Risk factors include high-speed travel without seatbelt use, contact sports, and exposure to violence.
