Causes of Malignancy
Malignancy develops when accumulated genetic mutations within a cell disrupt the normal controls on cell growth and division, allowing the cell and its descendants to multiply uncontrollably and evade the immune system's usual surveillance. These mutations can be inherited, arise spontaneously with age, or be triggered by exposure to carcinogens such as tobacco smoke, ultraviolet radiation, certain chemicals, and some viral infections. Chronic inflammation and a weakened immune system can also create conditions that favor the development and progression of malignant cells.
