📖What is Liver Cirrhosis?
Liver cirrhosis is the advanced, generally irreversible stage of chronic liver disease in which healthy liver tissue is progressively replaced by scar tissue, severely impairing the liver's ability to perform its many essential functions. This scarring develops over years or decades as a response to ongoing liver injury from causes such as chronic viral hepatitis, long-term alcohol use, or fatty liver disease, disrupting the liver's normal architecture and blood flow. As scarring progresses, the liver becomes increasingly unable to filter toxins, produce essential proteins, and regulate blood clotting, while the disrupted blood flow through the liver leads to increased pressure in the portal vein system. Cirrhosis often develops silently for years before symptoms appear, at which point significant, often irreversible damage has already occurred. While the underlying scarring cannot typically be reversed, treating the underlying cause can halt further progression, and complications can be managed to preserve quality of life, with liver transplantation offering a definitive cure in advanced cases.
