What is Refractive Error?

Refractive error is a very common vision condition in which the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing precisely on the retina, resulting in blurred vision at certain distances. The main types are myopia or nearsightedness, hyperopia or farsightedness, astigmatism from irregular corneal curvature, and presbyopia, the age-related loss of near focusing ability. It is not a disease of the eye tissue itself but rather an optical mismatch between the eye's length or shape and its focusing power. Refractive errors are extremely common, easily diagnosed through a standard eye exam, and highly correctable with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery.

Causes of Refractive Error

Refractive error arises from a mismatch between the length of the eyeball and the focusing power of the cornea and lens; an eyeball that is too long causes myopia, one that is too short causes hyperopia, and an irregularly shaped cornea causes astigmatism. Presbyopia occurs naturally with age as the lens loses its flexibility and ability to change shape for near focus. Genetics plays a strong role in most refractive errors, and excessive near-work or reduced outdoor time in childhood is linked to increased myopia risk.

Symptoms of Refractive Error

blurred vision at near or far distances, squinting to see clearly, eye strain or fatigue during visual tasks, headaches associated with reading or screen use, difficulty seeing while driving especially at night, needing to hold reading material closer or farther away, frequent rubbing of the eyes

Treatment & Types of Refractive Error in Mathur, Shivamogga, Karnataka

Corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses precisely matched to the individual's refractive prescription are the standard first-line treatment. Refractive surgery such as LASIK or PRK can permanently reshape the cornea to correct vision for those seeking to reduce dependence on glasses. Orthokeratology and specialty contact lenses are also increasingly used, particularly to slow myopia progression in children.

The four main types of refractive error are myopia (nearsightedness), where distant objects appear blurred because the eyeball is too long relative to its focusing power; hyperopia (farsightedness), where near objects appear blurred because the eyeball is too short; astigmatism, causing blurred vision at all distances due to an irregularly shaped cornea; and presbyopia, the natural age-related loss of the lens's ability to focus on near objects, which affects nearly everyone after around age 40. These types often occur in combination, such as astigmatism alongside myopia, rather than in isolation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can refractive errors be prevented?

Genetics plays a strong role in most refractive errors, but increasing outdoor time and taking regular breaks during near-work in childhood have been shown to reduce the risk of myopia developing or worsening. Presbyopia, however, occurs naturally with age and cannot be prevented.

Is LASIK a permanent fix for refractive error?

LASIK reshapes the cornea to correct vision and the effect is generally long-lasting, though presbyopia can still develop later since it results from age-related changes in the lens rather than the cornea. A detailed eye exam beforehand helps determine whether someone is a good candidate for the procedure.

Why do children need regular eye exams for refractive errors?

Uncorrected refractive errors in childhood can affect learning and, if severe and one-sided, contribute to lazy eye, so regular screening allows early correction with glasses before these secondary problems develop. Squinting, sitting close to screens, or complaints of headaches during reading are worth having checked.

Do glasses make eyesight worse over time?

No, wearing the correct prescription does not weaken the eyes or worsen the underlying refractive error; the perception that vision has worsened usually reflects the natural progression of the condition itself, especially in growing children. Regular eye exams simply update the prescription to match any changes.

What is the difference between orthokeratology and regular contact lenses?

Orthokeratology uses specially designed lenses worn overnight to temporarily reshape the cornea, providing clear vision during the day without lenses, and is increasingly used to help slow myopia progression in children. Regular contact lenses are worn during waking hours and correct vision only while in place.
