Pilonidal Sinus Specialists in Mutthur, Mysuru, Karnataka

What is Pilonidal Sinus?

A pilonidal sinus is a small tunnel or cavity that develops in the skin, typically at the top of the cleft between the buttocks, often containing hair and skin debris that trigger chronic inflammation and infection. It is thought to result from loose hair being driven into the skin through friction and pressure in this area, leading to a foreign body reaction. The condition ranges from an asymptomatic small pit to a painful, infected abscess, and it commonly recurs, particularly in young adults who sit for prolonged periods or have a hairy, deep gluteal cleft.

Causes of Pilonidal Sinus

Results from hair follicles becoming trapped or driven into the skin at the natal cleft due to friction and pressure, triggering a foreign body inflammatory response and cyst formation. Risk factors include prolonged sitting, obesity, excessive body hair, poor hygiene, and a deep natal cleft. It is more common in young men, particularly those with occupations requiring prolonged sitting such as drivers.

Symptoms of Pilonidal Sinus

A small pit or opening in the skin at the top of the buttock crease, pain and swelling in the affected area, redness and tenderness, drainage of pus or blood-tinged fluid, foul odor from discharge, recurrent abscess formation, fever if infection is significant

Treatment & Types of Pilonidal Sinus in Mutthur, Mysuru, Karnataka

Acute abscesses require incision and drainage to relieve pain and control infection. Definitive treatment for recurrent or chronic pilonidal disease typically involves surgical excision of the sinus tract, with the wound either left open to heal by secondary intention or closed using flap techniques to reduce recurrence. Minimally invasive techniques and laser hair removal in the area are increasingly used to reduce recurrence rates.

Pilonidal sinus ranges clinically from an asymptomatic small pit or opening in the skin with no active symptoms, to an acute abscess causing sudden painful swelling and infection, to chronic recurrent disease with ongoing drainage and repeated abscess formation, with treatment approach depending on which stage a person presents at.
