Treatment & Types of Chancroid in Modur, Mysuru, Karnataka

Antibiotics: single-dose azithromycin, ceftriaxone, or a course of ciprofloxacin or erythromycin. Buboes may require needle aspiration.

Chancroid presents with characteristic painful genital ulcers, and cases are generally distinguished from other genital ulcer diseases like syphilis by ulcer appearance — chancroid ulcers have soft, ragged edges and are painful, unlike the firm, typically painless ulcer of syphilis — with a further distinction made between cases with and without accompanying swollen groin lymph nodes (buboes).

Frequently Asked Questions

How is chancroid different from a syphilis sore?

Chancroid ulcers are typically painful with soft, irregular edges, while a syphilis sore (chancre) is usually firm and painless — lab testing helps confirm the exact diagnosis.

Can chancroid be cured completely?

Yes, it responds well to a course of antibiotics such as azithromycin or ceftriaxone, with most ulcers healing within one to two weeks.

Do the swollen lymph nodes need separate treatment?

Painful, fluctuant lymph nodes (buboes) sometimes need needle aspiration in addition to antibiotics to relieve pressure and speed healing.

Is chancroid still common today?

It has become much less common in many developed countries but remains more prevalent in parts of Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.

Should my partner be tested too?

Yes, sexual partners should be evaluated and treated to prevent reinfection and further spread.
