Intense itching in the pubic area (and armpits, chest hair, eyebrows, eyelashes), visible lice or eggs (nits) on hair shafts, small blue spots or tiny dots of blood from bites, irritability and trouble sleeping

Treatment & Types of Crabs (Pubic Lice) in Gumgera, Koppal, Karnataka

Topical insecticide lotions or creams (permethrin, malathion, ivermectin). Wash clothing, bedding, and towels in hot water. Sexual partners should be treated simultaneously.

Pubic lice infestation has no distinct medical subtypes, but is generally staged clinically as an early infestation with few visible lice and eggs versus an established infestation with heavy nit deposits, itching, and secondary skin irritation from scratching. Involvement can also be localized to the pubic area alone or extend to other coarse body hair such as the eyelashes, eyebrows, or armpits, which changes the treatment approach used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is having pubic lice a sign of poor hygiene?

No, pubic lice spread through close physical contact regardless of hygiene level, and their presence does not reflect how clean a person is.

Can pubic lice spread without sexual contact?

It is uncommon but possible through shared bedding, towels, or clothing recently used by an infested person, since the lice can survive briefly off the body.

Do I need to treat my partner too?

Yes, all recent sexual partners should be treated at the same time even if they have no symptoms yet, to prevent reinfestation after treatment.

Can pubic lice affect the eyelashes?

Yes, lice can spread to eyelashes and eyebrows, which requires a different, gentler treatment approach than the body since standard insecticide lotions should not be used near the eyes.

Should I get tested for other STIs if I have crabs?

Since pubic lice usually spread through sexual contact, it is sensible to get screened for other sexually transmitted infections at the same visit.
