What is Pancreatitis?
Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, the organ responsible for producing digestive enzymes and hormones including insulin, which occurs when digestive enzymes become prematurely activated within the pancreas itself and begin damaging its own tissue. Acute pancreatitis develops suddenly and can range from a mild, self-limiting episode to a severe, life-threatening condition involving widespread inflammation and organ failure. Chronic pancreatitis, by contrast, results from repeated episodes of inflammation over time that progressively and permanently damage the pancreas, impairing both its digestive enzyme production and its ability to regulate blood sugar. Gallstones and heavy alcohol consumption together account for the large majority of cases, making lifestyle and gallbladder health closely tied to pancreatic health. Prompt recognition and treatment of acute episodes, along with addressing the underlying cause, are important to prevent recurrence and long-term complications.
