What is Developmental Delay?
Developmental delay refers to a child not reaching expected developmental milestones within the typical age range in one or more areas, including gross or fine motor skills, speech and language, cognitive ability, or social and emotional development. It can be temporary and resolve with early intervention, or it can be an early indicator of an underlying condition such as a genetic disorder, autism spectrum disorder, or a sensory impairment. The significance of a developmental delay depends on which areas are affected, how far behind the child is compared to peers, and whether the delay is isolated or affects multiple domains simultaneously. Early identification and intervention are critical, as the brain's capacity for change is greatest during the early years of life.
