What is Trichomoniasis?

Trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by a microscopic parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis, which infects the urogenital tract and is considered one of the most prevalent curable sexually transmitted infections worldwide. Many infected individuals, particularly men, experience no symptoms at all, while women are somewhat more likely to develop noticeable genital irritation and discharge, though a substantial proportion of infections in both sexes remain entirely asymptomatic. Despite frequently causing no symptoms, untreated trichomoniasis can increase the risk of acquiring or transmitting other sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, and has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes when present during pregnancy. Causes of Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is caused by infection with the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis, which is transmitted almost exclusively through sexual contact, including vaginal intercourse and, less commonly, contact between genital areas without full penetration. Unlike many other sexually transmitted infections, it is not typically spread through oral or anal sex.
