What is Hypogonadism?
Hypogonadism is a condition in which the body's sex glands, the testes in men, produce insufficient amounts of sex hormones, primarily testosterone, or insufficient numbers of sperm, or both. It can be classified as primary hypogonadism, in which the problem originates directly within the testes themselves, or secondary hypogonadism, in which the testes are structurally normal but receive insufficient hormonal signaling from the pituitary gland and hypothalamus in the brain that normally regulate their function. The condition can be present from birth due to genetic or developmental abnormalities, or it can develop later in life due to injury, illness, aging, or other acquired causes. Because testosterone plays a wide-ranging role in male physical development, sexual function, bone health, and metabolism, hypogonadism can produce a broad spectrum of symptoms depending on the age of onset and severity.
