Causes of Impacted Wisdom Tooth
Impaction occurs because modern human jaws are often too small to accommodate the eruption of a full set of third molars, leaving insufficient space for them to emerge properly. The tooth may become angled against the neighboring second molar, remain fully embedded in bone, or only partially break through the gum, creating a flap of tissue that traps food and bacteria. Genetic factors influencing jaw size and tooth development largely determine an individual's likelihood of impaction.
