Causes of End-Stage Organ Failure
Results from the cumulative, irreversible damage of chronic diseases including long-standing heart failure, chronic kidney disease, cirrhosis from hepatitis or alcohol use, or advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Risk factors include poorly controlled diabetes and hypertension, longstanding substance use, repeated organ injury, and genetic predisposition to organ-specific disease.
