Causes of Gestational Diabetes
Caused by pregnancy hormones produced by the placenta that increase insulin resistance, combined with an inability of the pancreas to produce sufficient extra insulin to compensate for this resistance. Risk factors include being overweight before pregnancy, a family history of diabetes, having had gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy, advanced maternal age, and belonging to certain ethnic groups with higher predisposition, including South Asian populations. Excessive weight gain during pregnancy can also increase the risk of developing the condition.
