What is Squint?

Squint, medically known as strabismus, is a condition in which the eyes are not properly aligned with each other and point in different directions, either constantly or intermittently. One eye may turn inward, outward, upward, or downward while the other remains fixed on the object being viewed. It is common in young children but can also develop in adults due to nerve damage, muscle problems, or other underlying medical conditions. If left untreated in childhood, it can lead to amblyopia, or lazy eye, as the brain suppresses visual input from the misaligned eye.

Common — affects roughly 2-4% of children

Causes of Squint

Squint arises from an imbalance in the eye muscles or the nerves that control them, which can be present from birth or develop due to uncorrected refractive errors, genetic factors, or neurological conditions. In adults it can result from stroke, head trauma, thyroid eye disease, or diabetes affecting the nerves that control eye movement. A family history of strabismus also increases risk.

Symptoms of Squint

eyes that do not appear to look in the same direction, double vision, closing or covering one eye in bright sunlight, tilting or turning the head to see better, poor depth perception, eye strain or headaches, in children a gradual reduction in vision within the misaligned eye over time

Treatment & Types of Squint in Devarai, Belagavi, Karnataka

Treatment depends on the type and underlying cause and may include corrective glasses to address refractive errors, patching therapy or eye exercises to strengthen the weaker eye, and prism lenses to help align vision. Surgical correction of the eye muscles is often needed for significant or persistent misalignment, particularly when detected in childhood, to restore proper alignment and binocular vision. Early treatment in children is critical to prevent permanent vision loss from amblyopia.

Squint is classified by the direction the misaligned eye turns: esotropia, turning inward; exotropia, turning outward; hypertropia, turning upward; and hypotropia, turning downward. It is also classified as constant, present all the time, or intermittent, appearing only sometimes such as during fatigue or illness, and as concomitant, where the degree of misalignment stays the same in all directions of gaze and is more typical in children, versus incomitant, where the degree of misalignment varies with gaze direction and is more typical of adult-onset causes like nerve damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is early treatment of squint in children so important?

If left untreated in childhood, squint can lead to amblyopia, or lazy eye, as the brain suppresses visual input from the misaligned eye, and this vision loss can become permanent if not corrected during the critical period of visual development. Early childhood eye screening allows correction before this permanent vision loss develops.

Can squint develop in adults, or is it only a childhood condition?

It can also develop in adults due to nerve damage, muscle problems, or other underlying medical conditions such as stroke, head trauma, thyroid eye disease, or diabetes affecting the nerves that control eye movement. New double vision or eye misalignment in an adult warrants prompt evaluation to identify the underlying cause.

Does squint always require surgery?

No, treatment depends on the type and underlying cause and may include corrective glasses for refractive errors, patching therapy or eye exercises to strengthen the weaker eye, and prism lenses, with surgery reserved for significant or persistent misalignment. Many cases improve with these non-surgical approaches, especially when caught early.

Is squint hereditary?

A family history of strabismus does increase risk, suggesting a genetic component, alongside other contributing factors like uncorrected refractive errors or neurological conditions that can be present from birth or develop later. Parents with a family history of squint should have their children's eyes checked early as a precaution.

Can squint correct itself without treatment?

It generally does not resolve on its own and tends to persist or worsen without treatment, which is why prompt evaluation and correction, especially in children, is recommended rather than waiting to see if it improves. Early treatment gives the best chance of restoring proper eye alignment and preventing lasting vision problems.
