The condition most often develops in the days or weeks following a bacterial or viral infection, with the immune response triggered by the infection cross-reacting with and damaging the protective covering of peripheral nerves. Symptoms can progress rapidly, sometimes over just a few days, making Guillain-Barre syndrome a medical emergency requiring close monitoring, particularly for signs of breathing difficulty that may require mechanical ventilation support. With prompt treatment, most people with Guillain-Barre syndrome experience significant, though sometimes gradual, recovery over weeks to months, though some are left with residual weakness.
