📖What is Genital Warts?
Genital warts are soft, flesh-colored growths that appear on or around the genital and anal area, caused by certain low-risk strains of the human papillomavirus, one of the most common sexually transmitted infections worldwide. They can appear as a single small bump or cluster together in a cauliflower-like formation, and while typically painless, they can cause itching, discomfort, or, less commonly, bleeding. Many people infected with the human papillomavirus never develop visible warts at all, as the virus can remain dormant or be cleared by the immune system without ever causing symptoms, though they remain capable of transmitting the virus during this time. Because the strains that cause visible warts differ from the higher-risk strains linked to cervical and other cancers, having genital warts does not indicate an increased cancer risk, though vaccination protects against both categories of strains.
