A febrile seizure is a convulsion triggered by a rapid rise in body temperature, most commonly occurring in young children between six months and five years of age during a fever, often at the very onset of illness before the fever is even recognized. It is generally a benign event that does not indicate epilepsy or cause lasting brain damage, and the vast majority of children outgrow the tendency without any long-term consequences. While witnessing a seizure can be frightening for parents, simple febrile seizures typically last only a few minutes and resolve completely on their own.
