These conditions involve an unhealthy preoccupation with food, body weight, and shape that significantly impacts physical health, emotional wellbeing, and daily functioning. Eating disorders can cause serious, sometimes life-threatening medical complications affecting the heart, digestive system, bones, and other organs. They most commonly begin during adolescence or young adulthood but can affect individuals of any age or gender.
