A diabetic foot ulcer is an open sore or wound that most commonly develops on the bottom of the foot in people with diabetes, resulting from a combination of nerve damage, reduced blood flow, and impaired wound healing associated with chronically elevated blood sugar levels. Because diabetic nerve damage often reduces sensation in the feet, minor injuries can go unnoticed and progress to significant ulceration before being detected. These ulcers are prone to infection and, if not managed properly, can lead to serious complications including bone infection or the need for amputation.
