A dental abscess is a localized pocket of pus that forms as a result of a bacterial infection, most commonly originating from untreated tooth decay that has spread to the tooth's inner pulp or to the surrounding gum tissue. The infection triggers an intense inflammatory response as the body attempts to wall off the bacteria, resulting in significant pain and swelling. If left untreated, the infection can spread beyond the tooth into surrounding tissues, the jawbone, or in rare severe cases into the bloodstream or deep spaces of the neck, making it a dental emergency requiring prompt treatment. Abscesses are generally classified as periapical, arising from the tooth's root, or periodontal, arising from the surrounding gum and bone.
