What is Drug Allergy?
Drug Allergy is an abnormal immune system reaction to a medication that the body mistakenly identifies as a harmful substance, triggering an allergic response that can range from mild skin rash to severe, life-threatening anaphylaxis. Unlike common side effects, which are predictable pharmacological effects of a drug, true drug allergies involve the immune system and typically require prior sensitizing exposure to the medication. Certain drug classes, such as antibiotics and NSAIDs, are more frequently implicated than others. Recognizing and documenting drug allergies is critical for safe future medical care and prescribing.
