Causes of Chronic Kidney Disease
Most commonly caused by long-standing diabetes and hypertension, both of which damage the small blood vessels within the kidneys' filtering units over time. Other causes include chronic glomerulonephritis, polycystic kidney disease, recurrent kidney infections, prolonged use of certain medications that harm the kidneys, and long-standing urinary tract obstruction. Family history, obesity, and smoking further increase the risk of developing or worsening chronic kidney disease.
