Causes of Peripheral Neuropathy
Most commonly caused by long-standing, poorly controlled diabetes, which damages small nerve fibres through prolonged exposure to high blood sugar levels. Other causes include vitamin B12 or other nutrient deficiencies, chronic alcohol use, certain infections, autoimmune conditions, exposure to specific toxins or chemotherapy medications, and inherited nerve disorders. In some cases, despite thorough evaluation, no specific underlying cause is identified.
