Causes of Infection
Infections occur when microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites breach the body's natural defenses, such as intact skin or mucous membranes, and multiply within tissue faster than the immune system can eliminate them. Transmission can occur through direct contact, respiratory droplets, contaminated food or water, insect bites, or medical procedures that breach normal barriers. Risk factors for developing infection include a weakened immune system, chronic diseases such as diabetes, invasive medical devices, and poor hygiene or sanitation.
