What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia?
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common, non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that occurs frequently in aging men, causing the gland to press against and narrow the urethra. This compression can obstruct the normal flow of urine, leading to a range of bothersome urinary symptoms that can significantly affect quality of life. The condition is not a form of cancer and does not increase cancer risk, but its symptoms can overlap with more serious prostate conditions, making evaluation important. BPH becomes increasingly common with age, affecting the majority of men by their 60s and 70s.
