Causes of Trichomoniasis
Trichomoniasis is caused by infection with the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis, which is transmitted almost exclusively through sexual contact, including vaginal intercourse and, less commonly, contact between genital areas without full penetration. Unlike many other sexually transmitted infections, it is not typically spread through oral or anal sex. Risk factors for infection include having multiple sexual partners, a prior history of sexually transmitted infections, and inconsistent condom use.
