Causes of Vascular Blockage
Vascular blockage most commonly develops from atherosclerosis, in which cholesterol, fat, and inflammatory cells accumulate within artery walls over years, narrowing the vessel and eventually rupturing to trigger a clot that suddenly blocks flow. Blood clots can also form due to abnormal heart rhythms such as atrial fibrillation, inherited or acquired clotting disorders, prolonged immobility, or dehydration, and can travel through the bloodstream to lodge in a distant vessel. Risk factors for atherosclerotic blockage include smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and a sedentary lifestyle.
