Surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland, known as thyroidectomy, is the primary treatment for most thyroid cancers, often followed by radioactive iodine therapy to destroy any remaining thyroid tissue or cancer cells. Lifelong thyroid hormone replacement is required after total thyroidectomy. More aggressive subtypes may require additional treatment with targeted therapy, chemotherapy, or external radiation, along with closer long-term surveillance.
