Causes of Multi-Organ Failure
Multi-organ failure most commonly develops as a consequence of severe sepsis, in which an overwhelming infection triggers a dysregulated inflammatory response that damages blood vessels and organs throughout the body. Other major causes include severe trauma with significant blood loss, extensive burns, prolonged episodes of shock from any cause, and complications following major surgery. The underlying mechanism generally involves impaired blood flow and oxygen delivery to organs combined with a harmful, body-wide inflammatory cascade that damages tissue directly.
