Causes of Macular Degeneration
The precise cause involves a combination of aging, accumulation of cellular waste products called drusen beneath the retina, and in wet macular degeneration, abnormal fragile blood vessel growth beneath the macula. Major risk factors include advancing age, smoking, family history, obesity, high blood pressure, and prolonged sun exposure. Genetic factors, particularly variations in complement pathway genes, also significantly influence risk.
