Causes of Liver Cirrhosis
Most commonly caused by chronic hepatitis B or C infection, long-term heavy alcohol consumption, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, all of which cause ongoing liver injury and inflammation over many years. Other causes include autoimmune liver diseases, certain inherited metabolic conditions affecting the liver, and chronic bile duct obstruction. In many patients, more than one contributing factor, such as viral hepatitis combined with alcohol use, accelerates the progression to cirrhosis.
