Thyroid Nodule Specialists in Surehra, Delhi

What is Thyroid Nodule?

A thyroid nodule is a discrete lump or growth within the thyroid gland that can be solid or fluid-filled, and is a common finding often detected incidentally during a physical exam or imaging performed for another reason. The vast majority of thyroid nodules are benign, arising from colloid accumulation, cysts, or benign adenomas, but a small percentage represent thyroid cancer. Most nodules do not cause symptoms unless they grow large enough to be visible or press on surrounding structures like the trachea or esophagus. Evaluation focuses on distinguishing benign nodules from those requiring further workup or removal.

Causes of Thyroid Nodule

Iodine deficiency, autoimmune thyroid conditions such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, benign colloid or adenomatous growths, and thyroid cysts are common causes. Risk factors for malignancy include prior radiation exposure to the neck, family history of thyroid cancer, and certain genetic syndromes. Most nodules develop from localized overgrowth of thyroid cells rather than a systemic process.

Symptoms of Thyroid Nodule

A visible or palpable lump in the neck, difficulty swallowing if the nodule is large, hoarseness of voice, a feeling of pressure or fullness in the neck, rarely pain if the nodule bleeds internally, symptoms of thyroid hormone imbalance in functioning nodules such as weight change or palpitations

Treatment & Types of Thyroid Nodule in Surehra, Delhi

Evaluation typically includes thyroid ultrasound, thyroid function blood tests, and fine-needle aspiration biopsy for nodules with suspicious features to determine whether they are benign or malignant. Benign nodules are often simply monitored with periodic ultrasound, while nodules that are large, growing, or biopsy-confirmed to be cancerous are surgically removed, sometimes along with the entire thyroid gland. Radioactive iodine or thyroid hormone suppression therapy may be used in select cases.

Thyroid nodules are classified as benign, arising from colloid accumulation, cysts, or benign adenomas, which make up the vast majority of nodules, versus malignant, representing thyroid cancer in a small percentage of cases. They are also described as functioning (or 'hot') nodules, which produce excess thyroid hormone and can cause symptoms like weight change or palpitations, versus non-functioning (or 'cold') nodules, which don't affect hormone levels but carry a somewhat higher relative likelihood of malignancy and typically prompt biopsy when suspicious features are present.
