Causes of Lymphoedema
Secondary lymphoedema most commonly results from damage to lymph nodes or vessels during cancer surgery or radiation therapy, particularly following breast cancer treatment, or from infections such as filariasis that damage lymphatic channels. Primary lymphoedema arises from inherited abnormalities in the development of lymphatic vessels. Obesity, chronic venous insufficiency, and recurrent infections in the affected limb can worsen the condition.
