What is Stress Fracture?
A Stress Fracture is a small crack or severe bruising within a bone that develops from repetitive force and overuse rather than a single traumatic event, most commonly affecting the weight-bearing bones of the lower leg and foot. It occurs when muscles become fatigued and are no longer able to absorb repeated shock, transferring that stress to the bone until it develops microscopic damage. The condition is especially common among runners, dancers, and military recruits undergoing sudden increases in training intensity. If not identified and treated with adequate rest, a stress fracture can progress to a complete fracture.
