What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a chronic mental health condition characterized by recurring, unwanted intrusive thoughts, called obsessions, that drive a person to perform repetitive behaviors or mental acts, called compulsions, in an attempt to reduce distress or prevent a feared outcome. These obsessions and compulsions consume significant time, often more than an hour daily, and can severely interfere with work, relationships, and daily activities. Individuals with OCD typically recognize their thoughts and behaviors as excessive or irrational, but feel unable to control them without treatment. The condition often begins in childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood.
