Causes of Lipoma
The exact cause is not fully understood, but lipomas tend to run in families and are associated with certain genetic conditions such as familial multiple lipomatosis. Risk factors include obesity, a history of minor trauma to the area, and rare inherited syndromes such as Dercum's disease. They arise from an overgrowth of fat cells encapsulated within a thin fibrous layer.
