Causes of Type 1 Diabetes
Caused by an autoimmune process in which the body's immune system mistakenly destroys the insulin-producing beta cells within the pancreas, though the exact trigger for this immune attack is not fully understood. Genetic predisposition plays a role, with certain genes increasing susceptibility, and environmental factors such as viral infections are thought to potentially trigger the autoimmune process in genetically susceptible individuals. Unlike type 2 diabetes, lifestyle factors such as diet and physical activity do not cause type 1 diabetes.
